The recent Netflix launch of Devil May Cry's anime adaptation highlights its standout episode, which presents an origin story for characters Mary Arkham (Lady) and the antagonist, Rabbit, through contrasting animation styles and largely without dialogue. Showrunner Adi Shankar drew inspiration from his childhood in impoverished Calcutta, aiming to illustrate feelings of hopelessness contrasted with a playful Demon Realm. He emphasized the significance of silence in storytelling, positing that it offers depth in our hyper-stimulated modern society. The full season, comprising eight episodes, is now streaming on Netflix.
Shankar elaborates on the unique choice to keep much of the episode silent: "We now live in this world where everything's so maximal, so loud, so much stimulation... That silence is profound."
Reflecting on his childhood experiences, Shankar shares, "When I was a kid, Time Magazine called it the dirtiest city... I was trying to really just capture this feeling of hopelessness and how you're powerless to do anything about it."
