Diego, originally from Veracruz, Mexico, joined a Wisconsin farm utilizing managed grazing. Under Joe Tomandl III's guidance, he embraced opportunities to learn about cattle nutrition and soil science, despite language barriers. Tomandl, as executive director of the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA), leveraged a USDA grant to translate apprenticeship materials into Spanish, aiding Diego and fellow apprentices Miguel and Luis. This initiative highlights the support for Hispanic dairy employees, promoting sustainable farming practices while addressing the educational needs of a diverse workforce in agriculture.
I didn't know about the benefits of grazing and the effects of the seasons on grasses. I learned a lot here, especially since we don't have these practices in my town.
This is a rare opportunity, and I am very proud to be one of the first students to participate.
