Andrew Bellatti has signed with the San Diego Padres, as reported by Mad Friars. Previously a reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies, Bellatti showcased strong performance in the past but faced a significant drop in effectiveness last season. After spending time in Triple-A and dealing with a high ERA and low strikeout rate, he is now out of options and will start the season in Triple-A El Paso, making a strong performance essential for a potential call-up to the majors.
Bellatti has spent the past few years with the Phillies. He turned in a strong season in middle relief three years ago, with a 3.31 ERA and a 33.7% strikeout rate.
Philadelphia ran Bellatti through outright waivers last February, and he spent the entire season in Triple-A, allowing 5.48 earned runs per nine over 42 2/3 innings.
San Diego can assign Bellatti to Triple-A to begin the season. He's out of options, so if he does pitch his way to the majors, they can't send him back down.
His fastball averaged 92.4 MPH, down two ticks from its 2022 level. A dramatic drop-off in performance led to his loss of roster spot.
