Griselda Lopez Perez, the former wife of drug lord El Chapo, along with 16 family members, crossed into the US under circumstances tied to a government plea deal. This move follows the extradition of her son Ovidio Guzman Lopez, known for drug trafficking. Officials believe this family transition has implications for ongoing legal negotiations involving Guzman Lopez, although specifics of any potential plea agreement remain undisclosed. The family arrived with significant cash, adding to the intrigue surrounding their border crossing and El Chapo's legacy.
"It's clear that with his family going to the United States, it's connected to this negotiation or plea deal opportunity provided by the Department of Justice itself," said Mexican Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch.
Video footage posted on X shows the drug trafficker's family lugging suitcases as they wait to be processed at the border, reportedly packing $70,000 in cash with them.
Ovidio Guzman Lopez was extradited to the US in September 2023, and his mother Griselda and 16 relatives crossed the border shortly after.
US prosecutors have not revealed the terms of a possible plea offer or how the family's arrival may be tied to it.
