James Outman had difficulty in Spring Training for the Los Angeles Dodgers, showing regression from his successful rookie season. In contrast to his 2023 performance, where he hit .248 with a 118 wRC+, his 2024 Spring Training stats reveal a potential struggle, with a .174 batting average and an alarming 50% strikeout rate. Despite making swing adjustments and adding muscle over the offseason, he has failed to impress. Manager Dave Roberts commented on his lack of comfort at the plate. Outman's future may involve beginning the season in Triple-A unless improvements are shown soon.
Early on, he looked really comfortable with kind of a little revamped swing. But right now, he's swinging and missing a lot. I don't know if he's pressing. He just doesn't look as comfortable.
His inability to put the ball in play remains an issue though with an almost 50% strikeout rate. In 2024, Outman struck out 35.3% of his at-bats, which was up from the 31.9% in his rookie season.
