Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas has decided to give up his jersey number No. 11 for rookie pitcher Roki Sasaki, switching to No. 72. Rojas expressed hope that this gesture helped convince Sasaki to join the Dodgers. Sasaki recently signed a minor league contract after considering several teams, including San Diego and Toronto. He had previously worn No. 17 in Japan and No. 14 during the World Baseball Classic. The assignment of Rojas' old number to Sasaki is pending an official decision from the Dodgers' management.
I hope giving him the number helped getting him to sign with us, Rojas said via email.
It was a very difficult decision, but I will do my best to make it the right decision when I look back after my baseball career.
