Filippo Ganna crushes Giro d'Italia time trial as Afonso Eulalio clings to pink jersey
Filippo Ganna won the Giro d’Italia’s only time trial, a flat 42km course from Viareggio to Massa, finishing in 45 minutes 53 seconds. No other rider came close, with Thymen Arensman second at 1:54 behind and Remi Cavagna another five seconds back. Jonas Vingegaard, starting 2:24 behind Afonso Eulalio, was expected to take the overall lead but finished behind Eulalio. Afonso Eulalio, relatively untested in time trials, produced an impressive ride to keep the pink jersey with a 27-second advantage over Vingegaard. Arensman moved into third overall, 1:57 behind Eulalio. Ryan Mullen finished 65th, and Darren Rafferty finished 73rd. The next stage runs from Porcari to Chiavara with three categorized climbs.
"Filippo Ganna of Italy won the dominant 42km individual time trial along the coast from Viareggio to Massa in 45 minutes, 53 seconds. No one could come close to Ganna, a time trial specialist, on the flat route. Thymen Arensman finished second, 1:54 behind Ganna, while Remi Cavagna was another five seconds back in third."
"Pre-race favorite Jonas Vingegaard, who is also an expert time trialist, was expected to move into the overall lead after the 10th stage, despite starting the day 2:24 behind Eulalio. However, an impressive ride from the young Portuguese rider - who is relatively untested in time trials - saw Eulalio keep hold of the pink jersey with a 27-second advantage over Vingegaard. Arensman moved into third overall, 1:57 behind Eulalio."
"It was the only time trial in this year's race. Wednesday's 11th stage is a 195km route from Porcari to Chiavara that features three categorised climbs. The 109th men's Giro ends on May 31 in Rome. Ryan Mullen was 65th, over six minutes down, while Darren Rafferty was 73rd."
