The idea of individual actions reducing pollution is not apolitical – but the result of decades of strategy, largely orchestrated by the corporation that makes more single-use plastic than any other: Coca-Cola.
But it set the stage for companies like Coca-Cola to shift the responsibility away from producers and on to consumers. As Claire reported, the plastic industry knew these materials would wreak environmental havoc from the beginning.
