This puzzle has a rare double revealer, found at 42- and 52-Down, which cleverly sums up the wordplay. Depending on where you solve the puzzle, your first glance might elicit a melodic response, or it might not.
Those two-letter runs do turn out to be the notes of a scale, as you will find as you work your way through the down entries that contain them. The topmost set of squares match the bottom set, ADORING FANS and ALDO, for the DOs at each end of the eight-note run.
