On Tuesday morning around 5:00 a.m. local time, gunfire erupted in Mali's capital, Bamako, as armed men attacked at least one military police base.
A police source stated that the assailants remain unidentified even as gunfire has echoed through several neighborhoods in Bamako, including near the main international airport.
Mali's military leadership, which has been in power since coups in 2020 and 2021, faces ongoing challenges from an Islamist insurgency that has plagued the region since 2012.
The incident coincides with Mali's transitional government declaring a state of natural disaster due to unprecedented flooding affecting West Africa.
