IT Sustainability Think Tank: Calculating IT equipment capacity - the challenging path forward | Computer Weekly
Briefly

Sensing a need to control datacentre growth, legislators and regulators have begun efforts to require operators to report facility-level information and key performance indicators and set minimum facility performance thresholds. The European Union's Energy Efficiency Directive and Delegated regulation mandate reporting over 30 parameters for datacentres with more than 500 kW of installed IT equipment power demand.
Each new generation of IT equipment provides greater work capacities and efficiency than previous generations. Implementing a work per energy metric is a best practice, illustrating the benefits of equipment upgrades and workload management software for increasing IT infrastructure utilization.
Data centre operators are challenged in reporting server and storage capacity indicators, needing to maintain detailed equipment inventories and location data. Standardized methods are necessary to calculate work per energy metrics and comply with regulatory mandates.
