Originally published in 1989, HeroQuest is the granddaddy of tabletop dungeon crawler games, now rereleased by Hasbro in 2022 through crowdfunding. The gameplay involves one player controlling minions of Zargon against up to 4 iconic heroes such as Barbarian, Wizard, Elf, and Dwarf in a scenario-driven, semi-cooperative setting.
HeroQuest gameplay includes movement by rolling dice, taking actions like searching for traps or fighting monsters via opposed dice rolls. Combat mechanics involve attackers rolling dice based on their attack value, defenders rolling based on defense value, with skulls as hits and shields canceling them. The game ends when heroes achieve their mission or are defeated.
