Deno Land, led by Deno and Node.js creator Ryan Dahl, filed a petition to cancel Oracle's 'JavaScript' trademark and alleged fraud and abandonment. Oracle acquired the trademark when it purchased Sun Microsystems in 2009. Deno Land argues that JavaScript is an open standard with multiple independent implementations and not an Oracle product, so Oracle should not own the trademark. Oracle responded by filing a motion to dismiss the cancellation petition, which Deno Land says attempts to stall and avoid accountability. Oracle declined or was unavailable for comment on February 5.
"Yesterday, Oracle filed a motion to dismiss in response to Deno's petition to cancel its 'JavaScript' trademark," Deno Land CEO Dahl said. "But instead of addressing the real issue-that JavaScript is an open standard with multiple independent implementations-Oracle is trying to stall the process and sidestep accountability."
"The situation is self-evident to anyone working in tech," Dahl said this week. "Oracle did not create JavaScript. Oracle does not control JavaScript. Oracle should not own the trademark for JavaScript."
