AGCOM Commissioner Massimiliano Capitanio lauds a recent court ruling upholding the Italian Piracy Shield, emphasizing its unique role in copyright protection. He lamented that Google has repeatedly overlooked AGCOM's requirements to block pirate sites within 30 minutes. This ruling follows a similar case with Cloudflare, which faced potential daily fines for facilitating piracy through its services. AGCOM faces ongoing challenges in ensuring compliance from international tech companies regarding their legal responsibilities in Italy, as many are reluctant to adhere to local regulations. Attempts to reach Google for a statement remain pending.
Capitanio emphasized, "The Judge confirmed the value of AGCOM's investigations, once again giving legitimacy to a system for the protection of copyright that is unique in the world."
Capitanio expressed frustration, stating, "Google has routinely ignored AGCOM's listing of pirate sites, which are supposed to be blocked in 30 minutes or less under the law."
The court ruled against Cloudflare earlier, ruling its services were facilitating piracy, which led to potential fines of up to 10,000 euros per day if not complied with.
AGCOM is challenged in enforcing these legal obligations, as international tech giants often disregard Italy's regulations."
