A deepfake actor impersonating Ukraine's former foreign minister attempted to engage Senator Ben Cardin in an election-related conversation during a suspicious Zoom call on September 19.
Senator Cardin detected the impersonation when the individual began asking pointed questions about election-related topics, which triggered alarms, leading him to promptly end the call.
Senators' security officials noted that the impersonation was technically sophisticated, with the visage and voice mimicking Kuleba almost perfectly, raising serious concerns about election interference.
The FBI is now investigating this incident, as the deepfakes used seem to have been crafted with a high level of technical expertise, suggesting possible involvement by foreign actors.
