Sophos Study: 94% of Ransomware Victims Have Their Backups Targeted
Briefly

Cybercriminals target backups of 94% of companies hit by ransomware, increasing pressure to pay ransom. Recovering from attacks with compromised backups is eight times more expensive.
Median ransom demand is $2.3 million when backups are compromised, compared to $1 million when not compromised. Compromised backups give attackers more leverage to demand higher ransom.
"Ransomware-led outages... restoring IT systems is often complex and expensive." - Sally Adam, Senior Director of Marketing at Sophos
Organizations with compromised backups pay 98% of ransom demand on average vs. 82% for those without compromised backups. Non-compromised backups enable better negotiation.
