Ransomware attacks have surged dramatically in the K-12 education sector, rising a staggering 393% from just 14 attacks in 2016 to 69 in 2022. This alarming trend represents the broader vulnerabilities in educational institutions as they increasingly rely on digital systems, making them lucrative targets for threat actors.
According to K12 Security Information eXchange (K12 SIX), there have been approximately 325 ransomware attacks on public K-12 schools between April 2016 and November 2022. Following that period, an additional 85 ransomware incidents were recorded just up to early October 2023. Such figures emphasize the escalating threat to educational institutions and their data.
