A recent report by Abnormal Security indicates a significant 26.9% increase in advanced email attacks in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region from 2023 to 2024. Phishing incidents grew most notably, with a year-over-year increase of 30.5%, particularly in Japan and Singapore. Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks also grew by 6%, highlighting their serious financial impact despite slower growth compared to phishing. The report stresses the importance of real-time defenses as employees serve as the last line of defense against these sophisticated attacks.
According to the data, between 2023 and 2024, the median monthly rate of advanced email attacks in the APAC region surged by 26.9%, climbing from 472 attacks per 1,000 mailboxes to 600.
Out of all advanced email attacks, phishing - often the entry point for larger, more sophisticated attacks - rose most significantly across the APAC region, with a 30.5% year-over-year increase in incidents.
