MITRE Corporation's funding was at risk, alarming the cybersecurity community due to its management of the CVE database. The CISA stepped in to extend funding by 11 months. Although this was welcomed, apprehensions persist regarding the database's long-term independence. This prompted the CVE Foundation to advocate for transitioning the CVE into a non-profit entity, aiming to enhance governance and stability in vulnerability management and further engage the international cybersecurity community.
Active CVE Board members have worked for the past year to shift CVE to non-profit foundation.
The CVE Foundation created a website with express purpose to "ensure the long-term viability, stability, and independence of the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) Program."
