"Met Police received a referral on Thursday following reports of a ransomware attack on a London-based organisation. "Enquiries are ongoing and remain in the early stages within the Met's Cyber Crime Unit. No arrests have been made."
"They are kids - their personal details shouldn't be worth anything."
"You are probably prepared to go a little bit further to protect children's privacy and personal details."
"Cyber criminals will target anyone if they think there is money to be made, and going after those who look after children is a particularly egregious act."
About 8,000 children's sensitive personal data, including photos, names, addresses, parents' and carers' information, and safeguarding details, were stolen from Kido, a nursery chain with 18 sites around London. A Metropolitan Police referral has prompted an early-stage investigation by the Met's Cyber Crime Unit, with no arrests. The hacking group allegedly called Radiant carried out a ransomware attack and published a sample of stolen data on a darknet website as part of extortion efforts. Parents and affected nurseries have been notified. Cybersecurity firms and the National Cyber Security Centre condemned the attack as egregious and deeply distressing. Some parents said the nursery's communication was handled well.
