Genea, one of Australia's largest fertility providers, suffered a cyberattack resulting in sensitive data of IVF patients being published by hackers. CEO Tim Yeoh confirmed that data from their systems was compromised, as the Termite ransomware gang claimed responsibility. Sensitive medical records and identification documents were reportedly among the stolen data. Genea has taken legal action to prevent the further dissemination of this data while conducting an urgent investigation to determine the full extent of the breach, noting that no financial information appears to be affected.
In a statement given to TechCrunch, Genea CEO Tim Yeoh acknowledged the severity of the situation, confirming that data taken from their systems has been published externally.
Samples of the allegedly stolen data included sensitive medical records and government-issued identification documents, raising concerns about privacy breaches for IVF patients.
Genea has taken legal action by securing a court injunction aimed at preventing the dissemination of the impacted dataset by the hackers or any third parties.
Despite the breach, Genea clarified that there is currently no evidence suggesting that patients' financial information, such as credit card details, was compromised.
