Criminal background checker APCS faces data breach

Access Personal Checking Services (APCS), a leading UK provider of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, notified customers that their data was compromised following an attack on third-party developer Intradev. Intradev, a Hull-based bespoke software company certified under the NCSC Cyber Essentials program, detected unauthorised activity on August 4 and implemented initial containment measures. A detailed investigation and a review of affected files and systems are underway to determine the nature and scope of the data involved. APCS works with over 19,000 organisations, though the number affected remains unclear. It is unconfirmed whether ransomware was involved; certain files were affected.
"This incident involved unauthorised malicious activity with our systems and is being treated as a significant IT incident," he said.
