The NCC Group reports record ransomware attacks in 2024, with 5,263 incidents, a 15% increase compared to the previous year. Critical infrastructure was particularly targeted, especially the industrial sector, which saw a rise to 1,424 attacks. Factors contributing to the surge include exploitable products, compromised credentials, geopolitical tension, and ransomware-as-a-service. With cryptocurrency values increasing, attacks have become more lucrative, prompting a gloomy outlook for 2025, as law enforcement efforts struggle against evolving criminal tactics and migration within the ransomware ecosystem.
"Attacks have become more profitable due to increasing cryptocurrency values further escalating these threats," according to the authors.
"We expect to see a continued increase in attack numbers, in line with the incline observed since 2021," the threat intel team wrote in its 2024 report.
