The critical vulnerabilities in Automatic Tank Gauges (ATGs) expose tens of thousands of fuel storage tanks to zero-day attacks, risking physical world impacts.
With critical flaws discovered in fuel management systems, current estimates suggest still between 1,200-1,500 ATGs remain vulnerable despite efforts by CISA and Bitsight.
Pedro Umbelino highlighted that the ability to exploit these ATGs allows control as if one were the owner, raising concerns over catastrophic risks by unauthorized access.
The dangerous potential of this exploit is marked by risks such as changing tank parameters and disabling alarms, significantly increasing the threat of environmental damage.
