'The Wild Robot' Turned Its Animators Into Painters
Briefly

DreamWorks Animation created a completely hand-painted impressionistic look for "The Wild Robot," surprising even Director Chris Sanders during color timing reviews.
Chris Sanders stated, "We also lost contact with that analog handmade background that was so beautiful and resonant and really just emotional" in traditional CG.
Using new tech, DreamWorks painted in 3D, creating a blend of organic beauty and camera movement, while brushstrokes innovatively suggested geometry and detail.
Sanders emphasized the creative drive to push boundaries: "I was asking everyone to go as far as we possibly could to a world that felt like those soft painted worlds".
