Rian Johnson, renowned for his work in the murder mystery genre, has crafted two successful 'Knives Out' films and the series 'Poker Face'. The latter follows detective Charlie Cale as she navigates bizarre scenarios with a rotating cast. Johnson embraces a creative approach, pushing writers to try unconventional ideas within a familiar procedural structure. He plans to explore new creative avenues after the upcoming 'Knives Out' installment, promising a distinct departure from his previous works, marking a bold step in his career.
"The murder mystery genre has served me well," Johnson told Business Insider with a giggle in the days leading up to the season two premiere of 'Poker Face' on Thursday.
"To me, having a show like this, it would be sad if you just cranked out a version of the same thing every time," Johnson said.
Johnson knows the value in keeping things creatively interesting. That's why he plans to take a break from the whodunit genre and start a new project after his latest 'Knives Out' installment.
"It's a completely different thing," Johnson told BI of his next idea. (And no, it's not a return to 'Star Wars.').
