Inside the making of 'The Ballad of Wallis Island'
Briefly

The Ballad of Wallis Island, premiering at Sundance and set for theatrical release on March 28, is a musical romantic comedy centered around an eccentric lottery winner who brings together former lovers and musicians. Adapted from a BAFTA-winning short film, the film sees its creators expand the original concept to feature-length, diving deeper into character development and relationships. Key creative figures, including director James Griffiths and writers Tim Key and Tom Basden, discussed their process and the evolution of their beloved characters at SXSW, emphasizing the joy of creativity and collaboration.
"It was quite a short script, but we played around with it. It was all very loose and we just loved the characters and loved making it," Basden said.
"In the first one, I live on an island, I invite this guy to an island, we don't really get on. And then . . . we start to get on and it ends," Key explained.
"So basically everything in the first film developed and then added more dimensions and color to it," Key noted about expanding the original short.
The Ballad of Wallis Island is adapted from a BAFTA-winning short film produced in 2008, written by Key and Basden and directed by Griffiths.
