Cannes Is Coming, With or Without Hollywood
"Of course, I feel nostalgic for that golden age when studios used to produce a lot of films, every month, auteur films ... for what American cinema and what the studio system was."
"It's complicated to separate American cinema, with the studio on one side and independent cinema on the other side. We'll see."
The Cannes International Film Festival announced its lineup, revealing a surprising lack of American studio films. Only Ira Sachs' The Man I Love, a queer musical featuring major stars, represents American cinema in competition. Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux expressed nostalgia for the past when studios produced numerous auteur films. The competition includes notable international filmmakers like Pedro Almodóvar and Asghar Farhadi. American filmmakers Jane Schoenbrun and Jordan Firstman will showcase their works in the Un Certain Regard section, while Andy Garcia's Diamond will screen out of competition.
