Ashley Walters on his big directing break with boxing thriller A Thousand Blows
Briefly

A Thousand Blows is a thrilling historical series set in 1880s East London, created by Steven Knight and directed in part by Ashley Walters. The show focuses on the criminal underworld and boxing culture, featuring characters such as Sugar Goodson, played by Stephen Graham, and Jamaican contender Hezekiah Moscow, played by Malachi Kirby. The series has gained popularity, prompting a second season and even inspired a special sandwich at a local bakery. The director, Walters, expressed his initial uncertainty but ultimately found the historical context enriching and the scripts excellent.
In the beginning, I didn't know what I was meant to do, I had two months prep time, they gave me an office and I was twiddling my thumbs.
What was intriguing was how much I didn't know about this piece of history. I gained a better understanding of the characters, the world, the period.
The scripts were amazing, you always knew they were going to be with a Steven Knight script.
Erin Doherty delivers a stand out performance as Mary Carr the Queen of the all female gang The 40 Elephants.
