In April 1485, a perfectly preserved female body was discovered by workmen digging for marble along the Via Appia, outside Rome. The body was inside a marble box, covered in a fragrant bark. Bartolomeo Fonzio, a professor at the University of Florence, provided a detailed description of the girl's features including her pale face, long dark hair in a knot, and facial features that appeared almost lifelike. The preservation included soft skin and intact limbs, suggesting a remarkable state of conservation due to the burial conditions.
Fonzio reported the discovery of a remarkably preserved female body, with small ears, dark eyebrows, and a pale face, appearing as if freshly buried.
The body was found in a marble box along the Via Appia, lying on its face and covered with fragrant bark, preserving its appearance for centuries.
