The remains of a previously unknown Roman military camp have been discovered at Colm la Runga, situated at an altitude of 7,218 feet above sea level, dating to the last two decades of the 1st century B.C. This finding highlights the strategic importance the Romans placed on controlling the Swiss Alps, viewed as crucial for the security of northern Italy during their conquests.
Cutting edge LiDAR laser scans revealed differences in height in the topography of the Colm la Runga terrain, indicating the presence of man-made ditches and ramparts. Archaeologists have been excavating the battlefield since 2021, with the findings including lead sling bullets, spearheads, and an exceptional silver and brass dagger, showcasing the military activity in this historically significant region.
