""Once the Declaration of Independence is issued by Congress, then it kind of changes the calculus. Then, both sides are putting pressure on Native people to join one side or the other.""
""Fort Stanwix, a stronghold built by the British two decades earlier to protect an overland path through Haudenosaunee territory, would play a pivotal role in this campaign.""
In 1777, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy faced division as the American Revolution intensified. The Oneida and Tuscarora tribes allied with the colonists, while the Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca tribes sided with the British. This division led to the Battle of Oriskany, where Native soldiers fought on both sides. The conflict arose as British General John Burgoyne aimed to control the Hudson River Valley, impacting the Haudenosaunee's neutrality and forcing them to choose sides amid pressures from both the British and American forces.
