""Applegate Flag""
A 37-star American flag that draped Abraham Lincoln's casket during the 1865 funeral train is on display at Keens Steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan. Keens purchased the flag at auction for $525,000 and unveiled it during a private ceremony. The banner, known as the Applegate Flag, is believed to be the only surviving casket flag from Lincoln's funeral train, which carried the president about 1,600 miles from Washington to Springfield, Illinois, stopping in hundreds of towns. The flag was stewarded for generations by descendants of Army doctor Lewis Applegate after being gifted by Senator Edwin D. Morgan. Keens placed the flag in its second-floor "Lincoln Room," where it will be permanently displayed.
