A homeowner in Corbeil-Essonnes discovered his house was built on an ancient burial ground, leading to a major archaeological excavation revealing 38 graves.
The graves, dating from the 3rd to the 10th centuries A.D., were excavated and found arranged in parallel rows, indicative of burial practices.
Among the findings, ten plaster sarcophagi from the Merovingian period were discovered, with one featuring an engraved lid showing a rose window.
This excavation is the first comprehensive examination of the medieval cemetery, revealing that its use dates back further than previously understood.
