Diplomacy, Deception, & Bullets - How the British Destroyed Matabeleland
"The Matabele people, known as the Ndebele, were a Nguni-speaking tribe that established their own state after separating from the Zulu Kingdom around 1822, expanding their territory significantly."
"Chief Mzilikazi, starting with only 200 warriors, built a kingdom of 30,000 square miles, successfully defending it with an army of up to 5,000 warriors."
"The Ndebele faced significant challenges from colonial settlers, leading to two wars that ultimately resulted in the defeat and absorption of Matabeleland into the British colony of Southern Rhodesia."
Matabeleland, also known as the Ndebele Empire, was established by the Ndebele people in the 19th century in southern Zimbabwe and northern South Africa. Chief Mzilikazi led the Ndebele after breaking away from the Zulu Kingdom around 1822. The Ndebele expanded their territory by defeating local tribes, including the Shona. The region became a target for colonial settlers, leading to the First and Second Matabele Wars from 1893 to 1897, resulting in the dismantling of Matabeleland and its incorporation into British Southern Rhodesia.
