Dig volunteer finds rare Pictish ring
Briefly

The excavation at Burghead has yielded a remarkable find – a rare Pictish ring, one of very few known to exist, highlighting the fort's significance.
Despite the fort's history of being stripped for materials in the 19th century, this find by volunteer John Ralph shows that archaeological treasures can still emerge.
Professor Gordon Noble emphasized the uniqueness of the ring: 'There are very few Pictish rings which have ever been discovered...we certainly weren't expecting to find something like this'.
The ring, featuring a central oval red gem potentially of garnet or red glass, represents the high craftsmanship and cultural importance of the Pictish people.
