In a remarkable discovery at Rome's Appia Antica archaeological park, archaeologists have reunited an ancient funerary altar with its cover, which had been separated for 1,800 years. The altar, dedicated to Caius Ofilius Ianuarius, was found in July 2023, revealing insights about his family from the Republican era. The site, abandoned in the 4th century due to high water levels, preserved the artifacts in excellent condition. Despite looters having disturbed the site, both the altar and its cover survived remarkably intact and are now displayed in a nearby museum.
A significant archaeological finding occurred when an ancient funerary altar in Rome's Appia Antica Archaeological Park was reunited with its cover after 1,800 years.
The altar, dedicated to Caius Ofilius Ianuarius, reflects a prestigious location and status achieved despite his family's humble origins in the Republican era.
Conditions at the site, including waterlogged soil, have remarkably preserved the altar and its cover, allowing archaeologists to display them in virtually pristine condition.
