The Battle of Arbela tapestry, part of the Story of Alexander the Great series, is now exhibited at Blenheim Palace until 26 August. Commissioned by the first Duke of Marlborough in 1707, this rare tapestry was woven by Judocus de Vos and designed by Charles Le Brun. It illustrates the pivotal battle of 331 BC between the Macedonian Army, led by Alexander the Great, and the Persian Army under King Darius III. Restoration occurred in the early 2000s, with no record of public display since.
Carmen Alvarez, the collections and conservation manager at Blenheim Palace, states that the tapestry was restored in the early 2000s and has not been displayed publicly since its conservation.
The Battle of Arbela tapestry is part of a series commissioned by the first Duke of Marlborough in 1707, featuring the significant military accomplishments of Alexander the Great.
