The discovery of a late 5th century A.D. shipwreck off the coast of Ayvalik unveiled approximately 10,000 ceramic vessels, marking the largest archaeological dishware find in the Aegean.
This shipwreck, which lies at a depth of 141 feet, is remarkably preserved, providing a unique glimpse into ancient maritime trade, especially since it was laden with a diverse cargo.
According to associate professor Harun Ozdas, the ceramic dishes found are notable for their quality and variety, with models showcasing five or six distinct shapes, indicating advanced craftsmanship.
This wreck is part of the Blue Heritage Project, aimed at mapping underwater cultural heritage, highlighting the critical role of technology, such as sonar and robotics, in modern archaeology.
