15th c. coin hoard found in Scottish Borders
Briefly

Metal detectorists Keith Young and Lisa Stephenson discovered a hoard of over 30 coins from the 15th century in the Scottish Borders, reported to the Treasure Trove Unit. A subsequent excavation led to the recovery of additional coins, featuring a mix of Scots and English currency, including silver groats from Henry V and Edward IV, alongside gold demys from James I and II. This unusual find from a turbulent historical period sheds light on the complexities of Scottish and English relations during the 15th century.
Antony Lee from the Treasure Trove Unit stated that "coin hoards containing a mix of both English and Scottish coins are not unusual, but we do not see many hoards from this period in Scotland, so it's a fascinating find." This highlights the rarity and historical significance of the discovery.
The coins discovered provide insight into a turbulent time in history, where both English and Scottish crowns faced internal struggles, reflected in the mixed coin hoard.
