Texas State Prof Sues, Claiming Free Speech, Contract Violations
""without organization, how can anyone expect to overthrow the most bloodthirsty, profit-driven mad organization in the history of the world-that of the U.S. government.""
""The reasons Provost Aswrath provided for Dr. Alter's termination are false and give every appearance of politically-motivated discrimination,""
""In truth, Dr. Alter was terminated because he espoused views that are politically unpopular in today's politically-charged climate, in violation of his First Amendment right to free speech.""
""Anyone should be able to express their views no matter how unpopular they are without facing the repercussions that many people are seeing,""
Thomas Alter, a tenured associate professor of history at Texas State University, delivered remarks at a Sept. 7 Socialist Horizon conference that included a call for organization to overthrow the U.S. government. A right-wing YouTuber recorded and circulated the speech, and Texas State terminated Alter three days later. University leadership described the actions as incompatible with faculty responsibilities. Alter filed a lawsuit alleging violations of his First Amendment and due process rights and breach of his employment contract, asserting the termination was politically motivated. Alter said the dismissal devastated him and his family; he had earned tenure ten days earlier.
