Republican officials hired to lead FAU, FIU
Briefly

Adam Hasner, a former state lawmaker and current executive at the GEO Group, has been appointed president of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) following a controversial search process. The search was marred by issues including violations of Florida Sunshine laws and allegations of political favoritism. Critics argue the process was flawed, especially after Republican lawmaker Randy Fine was not named as a finalist. Hasner's leadership faces skepticism from students and faculty regarding his political rhetoric and lack of experience in higher education administration, yet the Board of Trustees voted unanimously in his favor.
"Mr. Hasner, your record speaks far louder than your platitudes ever could, because the FAU student body needs a president, not a politician," student Nick Ostheimer said.
"The initial search was scuttled in July 2023 after State University System chancellor Ray Rodrigues raised concerns about 'anomalies' in the process".
"Despite concerns from students and faculty about his past political rhetoric and lack of experience in higher education administration, FAU's Board of Trustees unanimously voted to hire Hasner."
"Critics have long alleged the search was upended because the board did not name state Republican lawmaker Randy Fine as a finalist."
