But that anxiety has now been replaced with a 'sense of jubilation' on campuses and among high school students who now know for certain they can take advantage of the program."
Maine's lawmakers passed a supplemental budget to permanently fund the state's free community college program, which began in 2022. The program initially supported high school graduates from 2020 to 2023 and was extended to the Classes of 2024 and 2025. Concerns about sustainability had previously put the program in jeopardy. After public support and discussions, a less expensive version of the program was approved, providing certainty for students and community college leaders.
