Matthew Rutherford, a carpenter from County Down, Northern Ireland, won the Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2024 champion award. He opted for an apprenticeship instead of university despite pressure to pursue higher education after his A-Levels. Inspired by his father's renovation projects and hands-on experience with construction companies, Rutherford found passion in carpentry and the building process. He believes that starting his apprenticeship gives him a financial head start for future plans, expressing excitement for working with his hands in the built environment.
I knew I wanted to work with my hands, which is not what people expected because I was getting on fairly well at school. I was definitely being pushed to go to university.
When I look back, I just have a great love for the built environment and the whole project and how it comes together from start to finish. A carpenter is there from the beginning.
