Higher ed war heats up as Trump threatens Harvard's tax-exempt status
Briefly

President Trump has threatened to remove Harvard University's tax-exempt status via a social media post, referring to the institution's political and ideological stances. This threat escalates tensions following the Trump administration's demands to Harvard, which the university rejected as illegal. In response to Harvard's stance, the administration froze over $2.2 billion in grants, affecting various research projects. Higher education leaders assert that Harvard's resistance could inspire other institutions to oppose similar demands, emphasizing the importance of academic freedom.
"Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting 'Sickness?"
"Harvard really had no choice given the extent of the demands the Trump administration had made upon it," said Michael Dorf a law professor at Cornell University.
"If Harvard hadn't stood up, it would have sent a chill across higher education that would have really hampered the ability of other institutions to define for themselves where that red line is," said Ted Mitchell.
Harvard's president rejected the administration's demands, saying they were illegal and an intolerable attempt to dictate 'what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire.'
