George Mason University is facing an investigation by the Department of Education for alleged violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Complaints were filed by professors claiming that race and immutable characteristics are improperly used in university policies, including hiring and promotion decisions. This investigation follows similar complaints against the University of Virginia. Concerns are rising about the potential impact on university president Gregory Washington. Additionally, another investigation is ongoing regarding the university's response to antisemitic incidents and unlawful DEI policies.
"It looks like the Trump administration is trying to force out George Mason's president," Robert Kelchen, an education policy professor, said regarding the political implications of the investigation.
"This kind of pernicious and wide-spread discrimination-packaged as 'anti-racism'-was allowed to flourish under the Biden Administration, but it will not be tolerated by this one," stated Acting Assistant Secretary.
