"Accordingly, the motion for Preliminary Injunction ... is DENIED,"
"We understand why the Court did not want to require such a major rule change on a limited judicial record, We remain confident the NCAA has no legitimate reason to make athletes sit out most [or all] of one of their five seasons of eligibility."
U.S. District Judge William L. Campbell denied a preliminary injunction after finding the five players failed to show they were likely to succeed on an antitrust claim against the NCAA redshirt rule that limits athletes to four seasons over five years. The five plaintiffs have each played four seasons in four years and include players from Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Nebraska. The case seeks class-action status and may cover thousands of current and former NCAA football, baseball and tennis players. Attorney Ryan Downton expressed disappointment and reiterated confidence the NCAA lacks a legitimate reason for the restriction. The judge granted a separate injunction allowing Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia to play in 2025. Coaches at the American Football Coaches Association voted to ask the NCAA to raise the redshirt game limit from four to nine.
