Enrollment regains ranking as biggest risk for colleges
Briefly

According to the latest Top Risks Report from United Educators, enrollment regained its place as the biggest risk facing colleges and universities, with 71 percent of respondents identifying it as such. This marks an increase from 67 percent last year, suggesting that institutions are increasingly concerned about maintaining and attracting student bodies in an evolving educational landscape.
Data security, which previously led the 2023 list of risks, fell to second place, now cited by only 56 percent of respondents. This notable decline from 73 percent last year may indicate that while institutions recognize data security as a challenge, it has possibly shifted in priority compared to more immediate concerns like enrollment.
Operational pressures related to business models and financial stability have emerged as significant risks for higher education institutions, with 42 percent of survey respondents acknowledging this issue. This suggests a growing awareness among colleges and universities of the need to adapt their operational strategies to secure financial health and sustainability.
Regulatory and legal compliance issues, not directly tied to Title IX or the Violence Against Women Act, saw a noteworthy rise in concern, from 21 percent to 29 percent. This spike reflects heightened scrutiny from federal and state governments regarding higher education practices, emphasizing the importance of compliance in institutional governance.
