Education Dept. Prepares for "Big, Beautiful Bill" Changes
Briefly

The Education Department is accelerating changes mandated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with new advisory committees formed for student loan and accountability regulations. These regulations include the termination of the Graduate PLUS loan program and expanded Pell Grant eligibility for short-term workforce training programs. The RISE Committee will review new student loan repayment plans, while the AHEAD Committee oversees broader higher education accountability measures. There are questions regarding the adequacy of the timeline for implementing these changes, as many provisions take effect July 1, 2026.
The Education Department is moving quickly to carry out the higher ed changes in the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Officials wrote in the announcement that this round of rule-making was necessary to implement the changes in the One Big Beautiful Bill as well as 'other administration priorities.'
