Bard College's board retained WilmerHale to investigate communications and financial contributions connected to Jeffrey Epstein and related matters. WilmerHale will review the full scope of communications and make recommendations on donor vetting, fundraising, codes of conduct, and conflicts of interest. The hiring followed Department of Justice-released emails and other communications that included a 2012 trip by President Leon Botstein to Epstein's island. Botstein said he first came into contact with Epstein in 2011 after an unsolicited $75,000 gift to Bard High School Early College and that he pursued the relationship as chief fundraiser; he also stated that Epstein was not his friend.
